Your Guide to Toxin-Free Nail Polish

A slick of nail polish can be the perfect finishing touch to make you feel your best, but many mainstream polishes contain unnecessary, harsh ingredients. Non toxic nail polishes are designed to be kinder on the nails, so I’ve put together this guide to the best toxin-free nail polishes in a range of hues.

In Spring and Summer time, there’s nothing like slipping your feet into open-toed sandals and admiring your fresh coat of nail polish or wearing a bright, summery pop of colour on your fingernails. But have you ever thought about what’s actually in your nail polish?
Non toxic nail polishes are designed to be friendlier to your nails, leaving out the harsher ingredients which can damage the nail and cause discolouration. In a range of beautiful shades from deep black to bright coral and neutral nudes, there are hues to suit every skin tone and colour preference. It’s important to remember that there’s no such thing as a truly ‘natural’ nail polish, but these formulas do not contain unnecessary ingredients and are designed to care for nails while providing a long lasting finish.

What is toxin-free nail polish?

Have you heard of 3, 5 and 7-free nail polishes? There are three particularly questionable ingredients that can be found in most mainstream nail polishes, including Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Toluene and Formaldehyde. If your nail polish is 3-free, that means it is free from those three ingredients. If your nail polish is 5-free, you can count out those three plus Formaldehyde Resin or Camphor, which can often be the cause of that yellow colour you are left with when it’s removed. 7-free nail polishes are free from all of these as well as Ethyl Tosylamide and Andxylene. Breathable nail polishes are water permeable and actually allow air to reach the nail as well as coating them in rich colour, so you’re left with the same beautiful finish without smothering the nails.
